We begin with the eclipse. The European Space Agency reports that its MTG-I1 satellite, the Meteosat Third Generation Imager, caught the full path of yesterday's total solar eclipse as the Moon's shadow swept across the Iberian peninsula. Totality hit parts of Spain between around twenty-past-eight and half-past-eight Central European Summer Time, converging with the advancing twilight as dusk fell. It's a rare image: a geostationary satellite watching an eclipse from above rather than below.
Also today. Astronomy dot com says a group of about fifty of its readers travelled to Madrid to witness the event, and describes totality as lasting roughly one minute thirty seconds for their viewing position. Reader dispatches are not science, but they do confirm the view was good.
Staying with the science. Phys dot org reports that researchers have helped unravel why certain pairs of stars pulse with regular, long-period bursts of radio waves. The key: every pair contains a compact dead star, a white dwarf, locked in orbit with a smaller red star called an M dwarf. The mechanism, the researchers say, mirrors the well-known interaction between Jupiter and its moon Io, where the orbital relationship drives the radio emission. That comparison gives observers a framework for spotting more of these systems.
Also from Phys dot org. A proposal to build an array of nine hundred telescopes working in concert could, in theory, detect the atmosphere of an Earth-like exoplanet in a single transit, meaning one crossing of its star. The key problem: a planet only crosses its star roughly once a year, so waiting for multiple transits is expensive. Nine hundred coordinated instruments change the maths. The proposal is not funded; it is a roadmap. But the problem it targets, finding oxygen and other gases in a distant atmosphere, is the central challenge of the search for life beyond our solar system.
Now the other end of the same curiosity. Space dot com says astronomers have observed a supermassive black hole spewing energy three hundred thousand light years into deep space. That figure, three times the width of the Milky Way, is the number that carries this one. No further detail in the summary, but the scale speaks for itself.
Staying with discoveries. Phys dot org reports that NASA's TESS mission has found a rare brown dwarf orbiting a massive, aging star. The story matters because of how the brown dwarf formed: inside the accretion disk of the host star, not from a collapsing gas cloud. That's the second of two distinct formation pathways for brown dwarfs, and finding a clean example of each helps settle a debate that has run for decades.
Also from Phys dot org. A Martian meteorite has given up new evidence for early water on Mars, even though no water remains in it today. Researchers from an international team including the Paul Scherrer Institute used neutron and X-ray tomography to find hydrogen-rich regions inside the rock, pointing to water-rock interactions early in the planet's history. It is a reminder that the absence of water now does not mean there was never any.
Space Command. Space News reports that more than one hundred personnel have already relocated to Redstone Arsenal in Alabama as the U.S. Space Command moves its headquarters there. Construction of what the outlet describes as a billion-dollar permanent facility is set to begin. The relocation has been contested and slow; these numbers suggest it is now moving at pace.
Also from Space News. A subcontractor called Paragon has laid off seventy people after NASA cancelled work on the lunar Gateway, the planned space station in lunar orbit. Seventy jobs. That is the cost in human terms of the programme cut.
Which connects to this. Space dot com reports that Northrop Grumman plans to take technology already built into the HALO module and repurpose it for the Artemis moon base instead. The Gateway is cancelled, but the hardware engineering does not have to go with it. No timeline is given, and the moon base itself has no confirmed construction date, but the plan keeps the investment in play.
And finally. Space dot com says NASA astronaut Mike Fincke has retired after thirty years of public service. He served as a two-time commander of the International Space Station and led the Commercial Crew Branch of the Astronaut Office. Thirty years is a long tenure by any measure.
